In recent years we redesigned the internship experience and studying abroad; lengthened it, moved some of our on-campus content to the internship, and restructured it as team-based learning, and renamed it “Global Internship.” The new Global Internship incorporates many activities which not only cause the students to reflect on their action, but to develop their skills for reflecting in action. Their experiences immediately shape their understanding, and the changes in understanding immediately reshape their actions.
During the internship students gain awareness, knowledge, insight and experience in cross-cultural ministry in a number of ways. They engage the culture and ministry on a daily basis, individually and corporately reflecting on that experience. They meet together weekly as a team to encourage one another in their walk with God through study of His Word, worship and prayer. Every other week interns focus on specific themes within culture and ministry and process them together. Global Internship Facilitators look for learning opportunities as they occur in everyday life, and about one week out of every four is devoted to a specific learning module or course. Courses include: Theology-in-context, Creative Ministry, Cross-cultural Communication and several others.
Finally, all BCOM students begin a personal portfolio upon enrollment where they collect information, journal entries, Scripture, prophetic words, and assignments, which are relevant to what they believe God is saying to them about their role in impacting the world for His Kingdom. The development of this “Kingdom Impact Plan” continues while they study abroad.
