Housing

LIFE IN THE DORMS

The details below are subject to change based around student enrollment and/or current ongoing building developments on our campus.

Students are divided by gender and marital status into the different buildings. Each cell group of 6 – 10 students lives on the same floor, with a minimum of 2 students per bedroom. Roommate and dorm room assignments are usually finalized 2 weeks prior to Arrival Day. Feel free to contact Admissions at that time to find out about your housing assignment.

Description of the Dorms

Finsaas Hall

• This building has 3 floors divided into 2 wings on each floor; and a basement level.

• Most bedrooms have a large walk-in closet.

• Bedrooms located on the west side of the building have balconies overlooking the courtyard.

• One refrigerator, a sink, and modest cupboard space is located on each wing.

• There are 3 bathrooms on each wing, shared between all students on that wing. Bathrooms have 1 toilet, 1 sink, and 1 shower, with a linen closet.

• Each wing has a furnished lounge.

• Spacious storage units are located in the basement of the dorm.

• A very large community kitchen, an informal dining/party area, and full laundry facilities are located in the basement level.

• The laundry contains 2 industrial washers and 2 industrial dryers.

• This building is not air-conditioned.

Shelling Hall

• This building has 2 floors divided into 2 wings on each floor; and a basement level. There are 3 bedrooms and a bathroom on each wing.

• Each bedroom houses 2-4 students.

• Each bathroom has 1 toilet, 1 sink, and 1 shower.

• Each floor shares a kitchenette with one refrigerator, a sink, oven, stove, cupboards, and counter space.

• Each wing has a furnished lounge.

• Good storage areas are located throughout the dorm.

• A large community kitchen and dining area, 4 bedrooms, a bathroom, and full laundry facilities are located in the basement level.

• There is a nice landscaped patio and garden area outside the basement dining room.

• This building is not air-conditioned.

In all of the dorm buildings, all windows come with blinds, and the living areas are fully carpeted. Vacuum cleaners, mops, and cleaning supplies are supplied. Washing machines and dryers are free to operate – students must supply their own soap. There is a central laundry in a separate building close to the dorms, which is available for all students to use as needed, as well.

Furnishings in the Dorms

Bedrooms

Bedrooms generally have standard twin-sized bunk beds; some will have standard twin beds. Married couples have queen-sized beds. Bedrooms come with one desk, chair, and bookcase per person, and one large 6-drawer dresser for every two people. Every bedroom has a closet.

Children are provided with twin beds and dressers, and when possible desks, chairs, and bookcases.

Sorry, we do not provide any X-Long mattresses, toddler beds or cribs.

Bathroom and Living Rooms

Each bathroom has a tub and shower. A simple shower curtain is supplied in the bathroom.

We provide basic furniture for the lounges (a couch, one or two chairs, one or more end tables, and one or more lamps).

Kitchens

In the dorms, the kitchen appliances provided are a microwave, gas oven/stove, garbage disposal, dishwasher, and a full-sized refrigerator. There is plenty of cupboard space to store personal kitchen items available to share. The student kitchen in the T.A Hegre Ministry Center has a work area, stove and refrigerator, but no dishwasher or cupboard space for storage.

Kitchens will normally have a set of dishes, silverware, cups, baking pans and cooking pots and pans, but we can’t guarantee that all kitchens will have adequate utensils, as items are sometimes broken or lost during the course of the year.

Phones

Each floor of the dorms has two direct dial public phones, which can be used to make or receive off-campus calls (long-distance calls require a calling card). Each dorm room also has a phone jack. If the student wishes to have an on-campus only private phone number, he/she can bring their own phone and hook it up to their private phone jack. Off-campus calls cannot be made or received through the in-room phones.

If a student anticipates making and receiving a lot of off-campus calls, we recommend that they purchase a cell phone plan and/or equip their computers with Skype.

Internet

There is wireless internet all throughout the dorms. However, there are no ethernet plug-ins for use, so you will need a wireless card for any personal desktop computers used within the living areas.

What to Bring

Linens

No linens are provided so you will need to bring your own sheets, mattress pad, bedspread, blankets, pillows, and towels. You may also wish to bring some kitchen linens (dishtowels, hot pads, oven mitts etc).

Lamps and Small Appliances

Overhead lights are in most of the rooms, but desk and floor lamps are sometimes nice for reading etc. You may also want to think about bringing along appliances like a coffee/espresso maker, rice cooker, waffle iron etc. if you enjoy cooking particular items.

Another option is to bring along extra money for purchasing some of those things once you arrive at school and compare what you’ve brought with what your roommates have to furnish your apartment.

Please Do Not Bring

• “Electricity-hogs” like mini refrigerators, chest freezers
• Personal microwaves
• Televisions/dvd players/vcrs (these are permitted only for families)
• Pets (fish in a solid small fishbowl are fine – no aquariums or any other pets)

A more complete list of what to bring will be provided in a final mailing about 6 weeks prior to your enrollment. Until then, contact Admissions if you have specific questions.
