How Bethany Assesses Your Abilities in the English Language

At Bethany College of Missions we do not admit students who simply wish to improve upon their English by attending an American college. We do not offer any English courses and do not have regular tutors in English available to students. Therefore, it is necessary for students coming to Bethany to have a very high level of English proficiency.

We have two means of assessing your proficiency in the English language:

1) TOEFL Scores
If English is not an applicant’s native language, they are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). 560 on the paper-based test or 220 on the computer-based test, is the minimum score that is generally acceptable. Testing information can be obtained from various educational agencies within an applicant’s country or by writing to:

TOEFL
Box 6154
Princeton, New Jersey, 08541-6154, U.S.A.

Telephone (609) 951-1100.
The web site is: www.ets.org.
Our school code is 9271.

Any scores lower than 560 (or 220) may not be acceptable for admission to Bethany College of Admissions.

Exemptions from the TOEFL:
If an applicant meets one of the following criteria, they may be exempted from the TOEFL exam.

a. The applicant has lived and studied formally in the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, or New Zealand for a minimum of 2 consecutive years, and has interviewed in person or on the phone with the Admissions Coordinator.

b. The applicant has studied in the English medium at the high school and/or college level, has received acceptable grades during those studies and has interviewed in person or on the phone with the Admissions Coordinator.

2) Composition Skills
An ability to write in English must be demonstrated by either taking the Test of Written English (TWE) at the same time as the TOEFL or by submitting an essay of three to five pages on any topic. When writing your essay, please do all of the work yourself and do not ask anyone to edit the paper. It can be handwritten or typed.

Applicants exempted from the TOEFL must still take the TWE or do an essay.
