Jesus is my Boyfriend?
Alright, I’m just going to be upfront and honest as a Christian girl. Ive used that line one, two or seven times before! All of you who are reading this who happen to be of the male gender are probably clueless as to what I’m talking about right now. Perhaps the females are too. All I’m trying to do is confess that Ive used the above line as a way to escape many an awkward situation or question from a man.
But is that statement more than an awkward way to get out of going on an even more awkward date? Is that statement actually true? Wait boys, don’t check out yet, because this statement might be true for you, Jesus might actually be your boyfriend (cue twilight zone music).
Let’s start from scratch. We are living in the middle of one big story right now: known to humanity as the history of the world, known to the God of the universe as his masterpiece. Believe me, if the script and screen play was put together by the one who made the scales on a cricket and the biggest supernova that’s out there then we can know we’re in for a good tale. There’s going to be some killer special effects and the cast is even going to include Brad Pitt, Catherine Zeta Jones, Johnny Depp, George Clooney and even you and me, not to mention the rest of humanity. Now about the ending, you’re going to want a spoiler about it because it’s amazing: there’s going to be a wedding.
Honestly, the first two chapters of Hosea hold the main story of the world, in, well, two chapters. He paints an interesting picture, one that is confirmed throughout scripture, all over the bible, New and Old Testament alike: we, as the church, are the bride of Christ. Let me clarify some things, by Church I do not mean the Assemblies of God or my cute little church in the corn fields of Illinois, I’m talking about the body of believers all throughout history and all throughout the world (which includes my church, and the Assemblies of God by the way!) So all of us who follow His Son and are committed to His way are the Church. We, humanity, were meant to be the treasured, loved one of God but some serious attitude issues came up: we threw his love in the gutter as we rushed after other lovers. These lovers include, and are not limited to, our own selfish gain, the approval of others, fame, pizza, riches, glory, myspace, girlfriends, boyfriends, acceptance, security, and chocolate covered peanut butter balls. These are the things we chased after instead of God.
